A burglar bored a hole in the
wall of a jewellery showroom on Paper Mills Road, Perambur on Tuesday night,
and fled with 3.5 kg of gold jewellery worth nearly Rs. 1 crore. Police are
examining the footage from a CCTV camera in the shop.
The burglary took place at
Santhosh Jewellery which has been owned and operated by Santhosh Jain (49) for
over two decades. The burglary came to light on Wednesday morning when he
opened his establishment for the day’s business. The showroom is shut on
Tuesdays.
Mr. Jain alerted the police and a
team from Sembium reached the spot and carried out a preliminary probe.
Fingerprint experts combed the crime scene for clues. The shop was sealed off
by investigators.
The burglar cut a small hole in
the rear wall of the shop, enough to allow a thin person to squeeze through.
“The suspect browsed through every display piece, pocketed all the gold and
left behind the boxes. He had planned the burglary keeping in mind that the
showroom will be closed on Tuesday,” said an investigation officer.
According to Vimal, who runs a
jewellery shop nearby, there was a CCTV installed in the showroom which had
captured the entire burglary. “The footage showing a thin man entering has been
handed over to the police,” he added.
