പാരീസ്: കൃത്രിമ ജീവന്‍ സൃഷ്ടിക്കാനുള്ള ജനിതക സാങ്കേതികവിദ്യാ ഗവേഷണത്തിലെ നാഴികക്കല്ലായി വിശേഷിപ്പിക്കപ്പെടുന്ന കണ്ടെത്തലില്‍ ശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞര്‍ സങ്കീര്‍ണ കോശങ്ങളിലെ ക്രോമസോം പരീക്ഷണശാലയില്‍ നിര്‍മിച്ചു. ചെടികളുെടയും മൃഗങ്ങളുെടയും സ്വഭാവസവിശേഷതകള്‍ ഇഷ്ടാനുസരണം മറ്റി പുനരൂപകല്പന ചെയ്യാനുള്ള ശ്രമങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് ഊര്‍ജം പകരുന്നതാണ് ന്യൂയോര്‍ക്ക് സര്‍വകലാശാലാ ഇന്‍സ്റ്റിറ്റിയൂട്ട് ഓഫ് സിസ്റ്റം ജനിറ്റിക്‌സ് ഗവേഷകരുടെ കണ്ടെത്തല്‍.

മദ്യമുണ്ടാക്കാനുപയോഗിക്കുന്ന യീസ്റ്റ് കോശങ്ങളില്‍ കൃത്രിമമായി നിര്‍മിച്ച ക്രോമസോമുകള്‍ സന്നിവേശിപ്പിക്കുന്നതില്‍ ഗവേഷകര്‍ വിജയം കണ്ടു. യീസ്റ്റ് കോശങ്ങള്‍ സാധാരണ കോശങ്ങളെപ്പോലെ പ്രവര്‍ത്തിച്ചു. മനുഷ്യരുടേതുപോലെ സങ്കീര്‍ണ കോശങ്ങളുള്ള യുക്കാരിയോട്‌സ് വിഭാഗത്തില്‍പ്പെടുന്നവയാണ് യീസ്റ്റ്. നേരത്തെ ലളിത ഘടനയുള്ള ബാക്ടീരിയകളിലെ ഡി.എന്‍.എ.യെ കൃത്രിമമായി ഉണ്ടാക്കുന്നതില്‍ ഗവേഷകര്‍ വിജയിച്ചിരുന്നു. സയന്‍സ് ജേണലില്‍ ഗവേഷണവിവരങ്ങള്‍ പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്.

എല്ലാ ജീവജാലങ്ങളുടേയും ശരീരകോശങ്ങളിലെ ജീവല്‍പ്രവര്‍ത്തനങ്ങള്‍ നിയന്ത്രിക്കുന്ന ഡി.എന്‍.എ. ഉള്‍പ്പെട്ടിരിക്കുന്ന ന്യൂക്ലിയോപ്രോട്ടീന്‍ തന്മാത്രസങ്കലനമാണ് ക്രോമസോമുകള്‍. ഇവയുടെ ഇഴപിരിയലും വേര്‍പെടലും കോശവിഭജനത്തിന് അത്യന്താപേക്ഷിതമാണ്. അതുകൊണ്ട് ജീവജാലങ്ങളുടെ സ്വഭാവസവിശേഷതകള്‍ മാറ്റിമറിക്കാന്‍ കൃത്രിമ ക്രോമസോം ഉപയോഗിച്ച് നിര്‍മിക്കുന്ന കോശങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് കഴിയും. എന്നാല്‍ ഇതില്‍ അപകടവും പതിയിരിക്കുന്നുണ്ടെന്ന് വിമര്‍ശകര്‍ ചൂണ്ടിക്കാട്ടുന്നു. മനുഷ്യനും പ്രകൃതിക്കും ഭീഷണിയായേക്കാവുന്ന ജീവികളെ സൃഷ്ടിക്കാനും ഈ സാങ്കേതികവിദ്യക്ക് കഴിഞ്ഞേക്കും.

ഇന്ന് ഭൗമ മണിക്കൂര്‍; വിളക്ക് കെടുത്താം, വാഹനവും നിര്‍ത്താം

പ്രകൃതിക്കായുള്ള ലോകനിധി ആഹ്വാനംചെയ്ത 'ഭൗമ മണിക്കൂര്‍' ആചരണത്തില്‍ കെ.എസ്.ഇ.ബിയും പങ്കെടുക്കും. ഹരിതഗൃഹ വാതകങ്ങള്‍ ഭൂമിക്കും അന്തരീക്ഷത്തിനും ഏല്പിക്കുന്ന ആഘാതങ്ങളെക്കുറിച്ച് ജനങ്ങളെ ബോധവത്കരിക്കുന്നതിന്റെ ഭാഗമായിട്ടാണ് ഭൗമ മണിക്കൂര്‍ ആചരിക്കുന്നത്. ശനിയാഴ്ച രാത്രി 8.30 മുതല്‍ 9.30 വരെ അത്യാവശ്യമില്ലാത്ത വൈദ്യുതി വിളക്കുകള്‍ കെടുത്തിയാണ് ആചരണത്തില്‍ പങ്കുചേരേണ്ടത്. ഇതിന്റെ ഭാഗമായി വിവിധ സ്ഥലങ്ങളില്‍ സൗജന്യ വിതരണത്തിനായി 5000 സി.എഫ്. ലാമ്പുകള്‍ കെ.എസ്.ഇ.ബി. നല്‍കിയിട്ടുണ്ട്.

വിളക്കുകള്‍ കെടുത്തുന്നതോടൊപ്പം ആ നേരത്ത് യാത്ര ഒഴിവാക്കി വാഹനങ്ങള്‍ ഒരു മണിക്കൂര്‍ നിത്തിയിട്ടും ഈ സംരംഭത്തില്‍ പങ്കുചേരണം. എല്ലാ വൈദ്യുത ഉപഭോക്താക്കളും ഈ പരിപാടിയോട് സഹകരിക്കണമെന്ന് കെ.എസ്.ഇ.ബി. അഭ്യര്‍ഥിച്ചു.

25 ദിവസം പ്രായമായ കുഞ്ഞിന്റെ ശ്വാസനാളത്തില്‍ നാണയവും റബ്ബറും പേനാ അടപ്പും

അമ്പലപ്പുഴ: ജനിച്ച് ഇരുപത്തിയഞ്ച് ദിവസം മാത്രം പ്രായമായ ആണ്‍കുഞ്ഞിന്റെ ശ്വാസനാളത്തില്‍നിന്ന് ഒരു രൂപ നാണയവും അന്നനാളത്തില്‍നിന്ന് റബ്ബറിന്റെ കഷണവും സ്‌കെച്ച് പേനയുടെ അടപ്പും പുറത്തെടുത്തു. ആലപ്പുഴ മെഡിക്കല്‍ കോളേജ് ആസ്പത്രിയില്‍ വെള്ളിയാഴ്ച രാവിലെ വീഡിയോ എന്‍ഡോസ്‌കോപ്പിയിലൂടെയാണ് ഇവ പുറത്തെടുത്തത്. ന്യൂമോണിയ ബാധിച്ച കുഞ്ഞിപ്പോള്‍ നവജാതശിശു തീവ്രപരിചരണ വിഭാഗത്തിലാണ്. കുഞ്ഞിന്റെ ശരീരത്തിനുള്ളില്‍ നാണയവും മറ്റും എത്തിയതിനെക്കുറിച്ച് അവ്യക്തത നിലനില്‍ക്കുകയാണ്.

ആലപ്പുഴ കലവൂരിലെ ശ്രീജിത്തിന്റെയും ശ്രീരേഖയുടേതുമാണ് കുഞ്ഞ്. ഈ മാസം മൂന്നിന് ആലപ്പുഴ കടപ്പുറത്തെ സ്ത്രീകളുടെയും കുട്ടികളുടെയും ആസ്പത്രിയിലാണ് ശ്രീരേഖ ആണ്‍കുഞ്ഞിന് ജന്മം നല്‍കിയത്. ശ്രീരേഖയുടെ വീട്ടിലായിരുന്നു അമ്മയും കുഞ്ഞും. കുഞ്ഞ് പാല്‍ കുടിക്കാതിരിക്കുകയും ശ്വാസം മുട്ടല്‍ അനുഭവപ്പെടുകയും പനി പിടിപെടുകയും ചെയ്തതിനെത്തുടര്‍ന്ന് ചൊവ്വാഴ്ച മെഡിക്കല്‍ കോളേജ് ആസ്പത്രിയിലെ നവജാത ശിശുവിഭാഗത്തില്‍ കൊണ്ടുവന്നു.

തുടര്‍ച്ചയായി എക്‌സ് റേ എടുത്ത് പരിശോധിച്ചപ്പോഴാണ് ശ്വാസനാളത്തിലും അന്നനാളത്തിലും എന്തോ കുടുങ്ങിയിരിക്കുന്നതായി ഡോക്ടര്‍മാരുടെ ശ്രദ്ധയില്‍പ്പെട്ടത്. കുട്ടികളുടെ ശസ്ത്രക്രിയാ വിഭാഗം മേധാവിയും പ്രൊഫസറുമായ ഡോ. എം.കെ. അജയകുമാറിന്റെ നേതൃത്വത്തില്‍ വെള്ളിയാഴ്ച രാവിലെ രണ്ടു മണിക്കൂര്‍ കൊണ്ടാണ് നാണയവും മറ്റും വീഡിയോ എന്‍ഡോസ്‌കോപ്പിയിലൂടെ പുറത്തെടുത്തത്. ഒരു രൂപയുടെ സ്റ്റീല്‍ നാണയം ശ്വാസനാളത്തില്‍ തൊണ്ടയില്‍ കുടുങ്ങിയ നിലയിലായിരുന്നു. ഇത് അണുബാധയ്ക്കും ഇടയാക്കിയിരുന്നു. മായ്ക്കാനുപയോഗിക്കുന്ന റബ്ബറിന്റെ ചെറിയ കഷണവും സ്‌കെച്ച്‌പേനയുടെ അടപ്പുമാണ് അന്നനാളത്തില്‍നിന്നെടുത്തത്.

IMRAN MASOOD ARRESTED FOR HATE SPEECH

The Congress candidate threatened to kill the BJP prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi if he came to Uttar Pradesh

Congress Lok Sabha candidate Imran Masood was on Saturday arrested on charges of hate speech in which he threatened to “chop” Narendra Modi “into pieces”, remarks that led to an FIR being filed against him by police besides sparking an outrage.

Mr. Masood was arrested in the early hours, police said.

Congress had distanced itself from the remarks by Mr. Masood, who is contesting from Saharanpur, saying it abjures violence whether of language or otherwise while BJP had condemned it as inflammatory and dragged Congress president Sonia Gandhi into the controversy.

A video footage of the election rally in Saharanpur, showing Mr. Masood attacking the BJP Prime Ministerial candidate, had gone viral on the web.

“If Modi tries to make Uttar Pradesh into Gujarat, then we will chop him into tiny pieces...I am not scared of getting killed or attacking someone. I will fight against Modi. He thinks U.P. is Gujarat. Only 4 per cent Muslims are there in Gujarat while there are 42 per cent Muslims in U.P.,” he had said.

However, he later apologised for his remarks, saying, “I should have been more cautious with my words” and that the same were said in the heat of electioneering.

U.P. Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) Amrendra Sengar said an FIR has been registered against Mr. Masood at Deoband police station of Saharanpur.

Mr. Sengar told reporters in Lucknow that the Congress nominee has been booked under section 125 (promoting enmity between classes in connection with election) of the Representation Of The People Act, and various IPC sections.

DELHI ZOO GETS NEW INMATES

The National Zoological Park (NZP), popularly known as the Delhi zoo, has got two new inhabitants — a pair of ostriches, brought from the Thiruvananthapuram zoo on March 22.

These flightless birds were last seen at the zoo in the 1990s and this latest addition provides an opportunity for Delhiites to see the birds up-close. Housed in one of the large open animal enclosures, the birds — both about three years old — are being fed mixed seeds, bananas and will soon be given vegetables and garlic (which is known to have medicinal value).

Zoo curator R.A. Khan said: “The birds brought from Kerala are already proving to be a huge hit among visitors. These birds were not seen at the zoo for a long time. ”

“The pair, we hope, will breed. As of now, we are feeding them the diet provided in Kerala, but there is a move to slowly introduce vegetables and garlic. The birds seem to have adjusted well to the new environment,” said Mr. Khan.

Ms. Ciby Jacob, who had come to the zoo with her two children, said: “These birds are exotic and we have only seen them in books and television shows. The children are going to be the biggest beneficiaries of this latest addition.”

KADAMAKKUDY PANCHAYAT GETS ITS FIRST BANK, ATM

18,000 people of 9 islands now under financial inclusion

Kadamakkudy panchayat, a cluster of 9 islands in Ernakulam district, will have its first full- fledged bank branch from Monday. The new branch of Union Bank of India, the lead bank of the district, is being opened at Pizhala in the panchayat on March 31, the last day of the financial year. The branch will have an ATM too.

Ernakulam district was declared fully banked in November, 2012, when Kadamakkudy, with a population of 18,000, was the only panchayat without any bank branch. The Hindu had reported it on the eve of the declaration by the RBI Governor.

The banking facility at Kadamakkudy was provided through the Business Correspondent model of the RBI. Accordingly, limited amenities such as investments were being carried out through a person engaged by the Union Bank of India. Absence of an ATM and difficulties in cheque-based transactions had rendered the service unattractive to customers in general.

The declaration as a totally banked district was made by the RBI Governor on the basis of surveys and an intensive campaign undertaken by various banks under the district lead bank scheme. The tag ‘fully banked’ tag is given to those districts with a minimum of 90 per cent of the people having accounts with any bank, according to officials of the lead bank.

The ‘fully banked district’ scheme was an offshoot of the policy decision taken by the Union government, based on an announcement on financial inclusion, made by Union Finance Minister in the 2010-11 budget speech. The idea was to provide banking facilities to all habitations with a population of 2,000 or more. Over 70,000 habitations have been identified under the programme all across the country.

Kadamakkudy residents had been making use of the services of Korampadam Service Cooperative Bank, but the service cooperative banks do not qualify for the nomenclature of a bank as per RBI guidelines, banking officials said.

The service cooperative banks are not authorised to issue MICR compliant cheques. MICR cheques enable speedy transaction in the banking channels and non-MICR cheques are being phased out.

The district has 904 branches of various banks in the public and private sectors now, including the district cooperative bank.

GSLV MARK III READY FOR MISSION

A forerunner to the Human Space Flight programme

India took the first step on Friday towards the liftoff of the experimental mission of its gigantic Geo-synchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle-Mark III when the rocket’s core stage, weighing more than 110 tonnes, was flagged off from the Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre, Mahendragiri, near Nagercoil, Tamil Nadu, to Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh. The significance of the mission is that it will be a forerunner to India sending its astronauts to space. For, the GSLV-Mk III in this flight will carry a crew capsule without astronauts. The capsule will return to earth with the help of parachutes. The mission will take place in June or first week of July.

The Indian Space Research Organisation calls its mission to send Indian astronauts to space the Human Space Flight (HSF) programme.

K. Radhakrishnan, Chairman, ISRO, said the crew capsule will weigh 3.5 tonnes. It will carry no astronauts, he stressed. It was a replica of the crew module that would be put into orbit in a real mission. “The module is undergoing structural engineering tests” at the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, Dr. Radhakrishnan said.

M.C. Dathan, Director, LPSC, emphasised that it will be an experimental mission. The rocket will do a sub-orbital flight, that is, reach an altitude of less than 100 km. Its upper cryogenic stage will not fire. It is “a passive flight,” Mr. Dathan said. Instead of cryogenic propellants, the cryogenic stage would carry liquid nitrogen, which would be inert.

GSLV-Mk III is the “muscular sibling” of GSLV-Mk II which has an indigenous cryogenic engine. GSLV-Mk III can put a communication satellite weighing four tonnes into geo-synchronous transfer orbit or a 10-tonne satellite into low-earth orbit.

Mr. Dathan said GSLV-Mk III’s core stage was flagged off from Mahendragiri on Friday. It would reach Sriharikota on Sunday evening. It will be married up with the other stages there.

“The assembling of one booster stage, weighing more than 200 tonnes, has already been completed at Sriharikota. The assembly of another booster stage is under way.”
