Kerala
panel recommends superannuation at 58
The
Kerala Public Expenditure Review Committee has recommended raising of the
retirement age of State employees and teaching and non-teaching staff of
private aided educational institutions and autonomous bodies such as
universities from 56 to 58 years.
The
committee, in its report tabled in the Assembly on Tuesday, pointed out that
there was an unprecedented 45.71 per cent increase in expenditure on payment of
salaries to government employees and teaching and non-teaching staff in all
institutions coming under the government payment system during 2011-12. The
year witnessed a 50.85 per cent increase in pension payments. The two payments
together constituted 48.69 per cent of the total expenditure, resulting in
acute resource crunch, the report pointed out.
The
committee was chaired by B.A. Prakash, former Head, Department of Economics,
University of Kerala.
