Two students of IIT-Madras have
been offered $2,10,000 (over Rs. 1 crore) per annum by an American
multinational company in this year’s placements, which began on the campus on
Sunday. As a matter of policy, the institution does not disclose details of the
company or the candidate concerned. However, this is a significant increase in
remuneration offered – last year, the highest job offer was for $1,50,000 per
annum. As many as 1,366 students registered for placements this year, compared
to 1,282 last year, Lt. Col Jayakumar, deputy registrar (placements), said. The
number of domestic and international job offers too, increased significantly
this year, said IIT-M officials.Companies that recruited at the campus on the
first two days include Samsung Electronics, M/S Epic, Microsoft India, Oracle,
Google, Capital One Services, LinkedIn and eBay, among others. Over 150 job
offers have been made over the course of two days.
Placement committee sources said
over 270 companies are scheduled to visit IIT-M this season. Salary packages
offered by Indian companies too, have gone up significantly, sources said.Students
said that this year, core engineering companies and financial firms were more
sought after than technology giants. “This year, we have interesting profiles
in research-allied areas and investment banking sectors that were not offered
in the past,” a student said.
