Aranmula mirrors and wooden jewellery boxes from Kerala might have many takers among tourists. But in traditional jewellery, rubies from Jaipur and pearls from Hyderabad top the popularity chart.Cashing in on the trend, SMSM Institute, under the Handicrafts Development Corporation of Kerala, is promoting an exhibition and sale of jewellery made of precious and semi-precious stones, brought from other States. The officials are eyeing the tourist season to boost the sale.“Last year, during this season, we sold goods worth Rs.30 lakh a month. The sale in jewellery section alone came to Rs.3 lakh. Since we have little traditional jewellery in Kerala other than in gold, traditional and handcrafted ornaments from other States are included in the exhibition,” says store manager M. Anwar.
The exhibition, being held at its showroom near Secretariat, has necklaces, bangles, and earrings made of precious stones including rubies, emeralds, and pearls. Visitors, mainly from the United States and Russia, are particularly interested in handcrafted pearl necklaces and contemporary emerald-studded earrings.The jewellery exhibition will conclude on July 31.Exhibition features jewellery made of precious and semi-precious stones brought from other States.
