Volvo Cars will next week unveil a new lighting technology that lets drivers keep their high beams on all the time without blinding other motorists.
The Swedish premium car maker said it will demonstrate at the Geneva auto show a new headlight mechanism that automatically shades as much of the high beam as needed to prevent dazzling drivers of other cars.
The system uses the camera that is already present in Volvo cars for their automated braking function to identify the other vehicle and the area that needs to be shaded.
The control unit relays the information to a projector module mechanism integrated into the headlamp. A tiny cylinder with metal pieces of different sizes then provides as much shading of the beam as necessary.
The system can be fitted on the new Volvo S60, V60 and XC60 starting this spring.
“The technology makes driving at night more comfortable and safe,” said Lotta Jakobsson, a senior safety specialist at Volvo.
Volvo also will unveil a new collision-avoidance technology in Geneva.
